Reconsider using your old carpet underlay or padding.
Can i use old carpet as underlay.
Hi we are thinking about getting a new carpet for our bedroom as the current one is over 10yrs old and as we have 3 cats and 2 dogs you can imagin ehow much air is stuck in it.
I do use old carpet among the fence with pine straw to cover the old carpets but will remove old pine straw to cover nice pea size beige rocks over the old carpets.
It can be used as a temporary weed suppressant around newly planted trees.
It will suppress weeds growing up through your gravel while still allowing water to drain.
Using your old carpet underlay or padding isn t a wise decision either because it will have broken down with age in fact when you lift the carpet you may find it is actually crumbling.
That is why i prefer old carpets that has no dogs or cats.
Most times it will have little or no actual underlay or padding left to it.
The price is right.
Looking at the price of underlay it is passible to get a carpet cheaper than underlay.
Underlay for the room would cost 80 but i can get a cheap carpet for 36.
But i wouldn t use carpetright either.
It will perish at some time and ruin the new carpet.
Often it is the underlay that makes the carpet last and feel good underfoot.
Is there any reason why i can t use my old carpet for underlay for my new one.
On the plus side.
Yes weed mat is not so good for the soil but i used old carpet for paths in the tunnel house and between beds in the veggie garden.
I would not reuse it if it was 20 yrs old.
It saves on the cost and labor of pulling up and disposing of the existing carpet keeping carpet waste materials out of the landfill.
I live in a mainsonette with another underneath and quite a lot of sound and smells.
I have an old cheap carpet which is flat as a pancake and i would like to get a new one for as cheap as possible.
On the face of it installing new carpet over the old carpet does have some advantages.
Be sure no pets on those old carpets or they will flock to spray over those old carpets that had dogs or cats.
I would always recommend removing the old carpet and putting down new underlay as this will not only be softer unfoot but will prolong the life of your new carpet 2018 02 19t18 45 01 00 00 answered 19th feb 2018.
Old carpet is cheap and you can even find roadside freebies.
It s thick sturdy and easy to handle if a bit heavy.
Mulch is always the best way to go but it is hard to come by.
