I have since decided to install vinyl sheet flooring.
Can i lay vinyl tile on cement board.
I d like to get as close as possible to matching the height of the existing tile.
Also this will likely shorten the life of the vinyl flooring.
For ceramic tile floors the cement board usually rests on a plywood subfloor minimum 5 8 inch thick exterior grade plywood or osb if new ceramic tile is being laid on an existing floor the cement board can usually be laid right over the existing floor finish provided it is in good shape and the extra floor thickness is not a problem.
Apply adhesive to backer board.
The ceramic tile institute of america recommends against using particleboard as a foundation for ceramic tile in flooring.
If you lay vinyl over it the vinyl will conform to all the imperfections in the cement board and your vinyl flooring will appear dimpled not smooth.
Use a notched trowel to apply thin set adhesive to the cement backer board in the area you will start applying the tile.
If you follow all these steps you ll have a stiff monolithic crack free floor.
Most vinyl tile floors are thin enough to support the extra thickness of both the backer board and the tile.
Birch or poplar underlay plywood is good for vinyl flooring birch is best.
To smooth the floor i covered screw.
If i thinset the cement board down using a 1 4 x 1 4 trowel and screw it every 8 will the thinset end up being 1 8 thick.
On top of the 2 6 will be 3 4 subfloor thinset cement board redgard thinset tile.
Installing over existing vinyl.
Installing ceramic tile over vinyl or linoleum surfaces can be more complicated than expected and probably should be avoided whenever possible.
Only mix as much thin set as you can use in a half hour and be sure to have solid support under each tile.
The cement board is not smooth.
However if you can t remove the old surface or otherwise decide to install over it lay a backer board with thin set over the old surface to serve as your new subfloor material.
Lay the tile in the thin set using the chalk lines for reference making sure tile are properly spaced aligned even and level.
Lay the tile in thin set set the tiles using the same latex modified thin set and techniques used for the cement board.
One of the most important is the decision to use glue down tiles or self.
Over time the likelihood of problems arising from such installation are far higher than if you use a substrate such as concrete which is recommended.
Here is my concern.
